Your cloud, your rules – choose from the latest operating systems
With the launch of Debian 8 and Ubuntu 16.04 on our all-new CloudNX platform, it’s the perfect time for an overview of our wide variety of cloud server operating systems. Whether you have a specific OS in mind or you’re weighing up the various possibilities for your next project, getting started with your selected system is simple via the easy-to-use Cloud Panel.
When you log in to your Cloud Panel and create a new server, you have a choice of operating systems alongside the CPU, RAM and SSD configurations. Under ‘Fasthosts Images’ you can see the initial split between Linux and Windows. You’ve probably already decided on one of these based on the needs of your project and your applications, but it’s always worth taking an in-depth look at the following options.
Next you have a selection of Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Debian and CentOS) or Windows versions (2012 and 2008). Remember that for Linux operating systems, you’ll also have the chance to pick from a range of release versions. Fasthosts now supports Ubuntu 16.04 and Debian 8, allowing you to take advantage of the most current features and performance benefits of the very latest releases. If you prefer a different version for any reason, we also provide full support for Ubuntu 12.04, Ubuntu 14.04 and Debian 7, as well as CentOS 7 and CentOS 6.
You can then choose between 32-bit and 64-bit architecture, and either a standard or minimum installation base. Standard installations include packages for basic services, e.g. for a web, database or DNS server, whereas minimum installations only contain the essentials needed to run the server.
Finally, you have the opportunity to select any additional software you require for your project, such as a Plesk or cPanel control panel, or Microsoft SQL Server with Windows. Bear in mind that additional software may involve an extra cost. You’re then ready to create your server, with a clear summary of monthly charges – just click ‘Create’ to provision the new virtual machine in a matter of seconds.
Need even more choice when it comes to installation? Or maybe you already have an OS license you’d like to use? In the Cloud Panel you have the ability to load ISOs of various operating systems including the previously mentioned Linux and Windows versions, plus others such as Red Hat and Knoppix. You’ll need to wait for the sever to be ready before installing your OS of choice via the KVM console, and you’ll have to supply your own license key – but the ISO option gives you maximum flexibility to install your operating system exactly the way you like it.
Of course, while it’s great to know that you have a wide choice of operating systems at your disposal, when you’re managing multiple cloud servers it can all get a bit much to keep track of. In the Fasthosts Cloud Panel, we’ve made the process of provisioning a new server as painless and hassle-free as possible. With server images, you don’t even need to worry about the OS when creating a new VM – just click the ‘My Images’ tab to select a pre-existing image with your preferred operating system already set up and ready to go.
