The Internet of Things – what is it and how does it affect us in our everyday lives?

The Internet of Things (IoT). It is a phrase that has got people talking over these past few months. From Forbes, to office workers, bloggers to the BBC, the rapid development of technology and the impact this may have on our lives is something that has caused quite a stir. But what exactly is the Internet of Things, what does it mean and will it affect you? Well, this blog will take you through everything you need to know about the IoT or Internet of Things.

Defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as, ‘The interconnection via the Internet of computing devices embedded in everyday objects, enabling them to send and receive data.’ The Internet of Things is probably most simply thought of as the development of the internet, and Wi-Fi, which has enabled objects to become connected and used in a completely different way. It is all about connecting the internet with everything else, as it were.

It has been widely reported that the Internet of Things will eventually penetrate every area of our lives, and this is something that can already be seen to be happening. You may have heard of Hive, a system which allows you to control your heating at home from your mobile device. If you reach the office and aren’t sure if you remembered to turn your heating off, all you need to do is download the app to your smartphone and you can check, control and monitor your heating and hot water. Similarly, smart fridges are slowly being introduced. When your fridge is running low, items will automatically be added to your phone’s grocery list and when you reach the shop, you will be reminded of all the items you need to buy! These are just some examples of products that have been combined with IoT that may have an impact on your life!

So that is a brief description of the Internet of Things, an introduction to the types of products that are being released and how these may have an impact on your everyday life. But how are businesses using the IoT and should you be concerned about the data they are collecting? The idea of the Internet of Things offers huge potential for businesses in terms of digital marketing, making processes much easier for businesses and ultimately improving their efficiency. The Internet of Things has allowed businesses to improve their digital security and offer customers a much more cohesive, personalised and tailored service.

However, with regards to businesses being able to collect more data about their customers, the Internet of Things does allow businesses to do this much easier. Whilst this allows businesses to provide customers with the tailored service explained earlier, customers are naturally concerned that their personal footprint is being captured and then exploited. This opinion is one that, quite rightly, many customers are wary about. However, many businesses are openly aware of this and have therefore put in place steps to ensure customers feel comfortable and form trust.

So there you have it, the initial information you need to know about the Internet of Things, what it is, what it does, how it may affect your everyday life and how businesses are using it to improve their customers’ journey. But what do you think about it all? Were you aware of the impact this was having on your everyday life? Do you feel the Internet of Things will benefit you? Or are you concerned about big data and the way technology is developing? Whatever your thoughts I would love to hear them! So get in touch and leave your comments below or alternatively tweet me!
