Has IE9 Lived Up To The Hype?
Internet Explorer 9 was released last Monday and was downloaded 2.35 million times within 24 hours of its launch. However, has it lived up to the hype? With Firefox 4 due to be launched on 22nd March will IE9 stand strong in the battle of the browsers?
Over the last 3 days we’ve noticed that 1.38% of traffic to the Fasthosts website has been from visitors using IE9 and it is growing every day, as expected. However, it has a long way to go to catch up IE8 which is by far the most popular browser for Fasthosts users.
Microsoft were criticised for the speed of IE8 compared to its rivals and so the company have focussed on fixing that issue by using hardware acceleration from the GPU for loading web pages and graphics. Microsoft has also provided a page to test the speed of your browsers which is a brave move considering that the latest Chrome and Firefox browsers tend to outperform IE. You can choose to turn GPU off if your computer’s hardware isn’t that great.
Whilst IE9 does show a number of improvements it is still hard to see why Firefox fans will be converting back to Microsoft’s latest release. Speed and security are two big plus points of IE9 but with a lack of add-ons it is hard to see the market share grow in their favour. Let’s hope we’re not waiting for another 2 years for IE10, if they can continue to improve on IE9 then perhaps the next release will start to give Firefox some sleepless nights.
