Fasthosts to participate in World IPv6 day!
Fasthosts, alongside major content & service providers (Google, Facebook, etc) is participating in World IPv6 day on the 8th June 2011. On this day for a 24 hour period we will be enabling the Fasthosts.co.uk website for IPv6 – it will be able to serve both visitors on IPv4 and IPv6 (ie a dual stack).
As you may / may not be aware – the last IPv4 addresses were allocated earlier this year by IANA ( www.iana.org )– the last remaining blocks of IPv4 are currently with the regional registries (our regional registry is RIPE) – who only have 220K~ /24’s left. When regional registries run out of IPv4 addresses, service providers/isps/content providers will be unable to obtain any further IP address space. With the explosion of consumer smart technology (phones, laptops/pads, etc.) a solution was required to enable the continued rapid growth of these devices. IPv6 is the solution to this problem – IPv6 provides a vastly greater address pool (IPv6 addresses are 128 bit versus 32bit for IPv4) which should meet the requirements of the growing internet for at least the next 50 years or so.
The main Fasthosts UK website ( www.fasthosts.co.uk ) will have a quad A record inserted into the name server. This means clients who attempt to access www.fasthosts.co.uk and have a functioning IPv6 stack will access the content over IPv6. If you have a functioning IPv6 connection this will work for you and there should be no difference in the two bar how the content is delivered.
Over the last few months behind the scenes we’ve been making various changes to our core routing equipment in order to support IPv6 including the setting up of a native IPv6 feed with our upstream provider. We’ve been allocated an IPv6 address range that provides us with 79,228,162,514,264,337,593,543,950,336 ip addresses which equates to roughly 10,000 IPs per creature on the planet.
By taking part in this experiment – it allows participants to take measurements and gain an understanding about how IPv6 works in a dual-stack environment. From our own perspective, we’ll gain statistical information on resource consumption on hardware and the other components that make up our services. From a global scale participants as a whole get a glimpse into how an IPv6-enabled internet would function.
