Finding and Installing WordPress Themes
Everyone has heard of WordPress and knows that the platform is used to build and publish websites and blogs. WordPress say more than 409 million people view in excess of 15.5 million pages every month while users publish around 41.7 million new posts and leave 60.5 million comments monthly. These statistics speak volumes about the general public’s confidence in the company and its offerings but what can it do for you?
Simple, effective design
WordPress themes are templates users can use to design their website showcasing their content in a logical and visually appealing way. Recent figures show that more than 23% of websites are powered by WordPress. With so many sites being built from similar templates you might think there’s a risk of them looking similar but they are all unique due to the thousands of themes available including custom options. To find the best one for you, you could just search for a theme on any search engine but it’s not necessarily the best or most efficient way to find the best theme for your site. There are actually specific marketplaces and directories for WordPress themes that mean you can find free or premium options that will best suit your brand.
The WordPress theme directory
As in most cases, the best resource is normally the official one and in this case it’s no different. The WordPress Theme Directory is official WordPress property and has more than 2,500 free themes. Every theme listed is also reviewed and approved to meet the security standards set by WordPress; this is not the case with every theme directory available!
It’s really simple to navigate and select a new theme, all you need to do is:
- Go to your WordPress Dashboard
- Click Appearance and choose Themes
- Click Add New and browse the directory using the search or filter options
- Click to Preview or Activate to apply the Theme
Premium theme marketplaces
If you can’t find a theme to suit your needs there are many other marketplaces you can try, just make sure you check to see how secure they are and how good the support is for them, before implementing. If you’re interested in a premium theme these are usually available from commercial directories that will charge but will also include extra features, regular updates, unique designs, support and helpful plugins. Some examples of reputable marketplaces include: TemplateMonster.com, WooThemes.com, and ThemeForest.com.
These can be more difficult to apply to your WordPress installation but the usual steps are:
- Select your theme
- Download it to your computer as a .zip file
- Add it to your local library (using the WordPress Administration Panel, cPanel, or manually by FTP)
You can find more detailed information about how to do this at WordPress.org if you are still having trouble.
